Living Well at Home isn’t just advice we give to seniors and their loved ones. It’s something we practice on a daily basis. For us, a healthy diet in the office is vital to living and working well.
Living Well: Diet at the Office
What does it mean to live well? When we talk to the community, at our “Live Well at Home” seminars for example, our focus is mainly what entails living well at home and what exactly a healthy lifestyle looks like. Balance is the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle.
This includes regular exercise, getting enough sleep at night, as well as making sure to eat a proper diet. This advice isn’t just for our community and clients. We love our food here at Aware Senior Care and we take it very seriously!
With that thought, we would like to share one way that we practice what we preach to live and eat well while at the office.
Every Friday, we have a company lunch where we meet together as a team and share some of the accomplishments from the week. We definitely have our favorite restaurants that we frequent here in Cary. These include Sassool, Diced, and Kale Me Crazy.
These three in particular offer a lot of health conscious menu items and entrees at an affordable price. Most importantly, their menu options fit very well under the “Eat Real Food” guide we highly recommend for optimal living.
A family-owned restaurant that serves traditional Lebanese food in the Mediterranean Diet, which has been shown in studies to decrease the likelihood of cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease. You can’t go wrong with any of the wraps and platters, but our favorites are the Sassool Platter and the Kale Salad.
A fast-casual restaurant with two locations in Cary and Raleigh. Their focus is on salads and wraps with fresh and organic ingredients. The best part is you can see them making your salad and wrap in front of you, so you know exactly what you’re getting. It’s also nice having the option to put together your own salad, if you desire.
Similar to Diced, Kale Me Crazy puts an emphasis on healthy, fresh, and organic menu items. In addition to salads and wraps, they also offer a number of juices and smoothies as well as packages for those interested in juice cleansing.
But, “balance” means that sometimes we also like to splurge for Torero’s Mexican Restaurant on Taco Tuesdays. I mean, you can’t beat $1.00 tacos. Each one of these places offers some nice options that are not only appealing and taste good, but also work along with a balanced lifestyle.
Living Well with Healthy Snacks and Recipes
In addition to having well planned and balanced meals, snacks also have to be considered as part of living well. Again, balance here is key. The office is stocked with apples, walnuts, almonds, strawberries, and La Croix seltzers…as well as cookies from Harris Teeter.
Our office can be fast-paced, so we are passionate about our snacks! So much so, that it was decided a few months ago that we needed to add a critical piece of equipment to our kitchen: a Vitamix!
The Vitamix has been something that we use on almost a daily basis. A Vitamix is a high-performance blender that can make smoothies, soups, flours/dough, desserts, batters, and even baby food (not that we have yet, but you never know).
Everyone in the office enjoys a smoothie made from fresh fruits and vegetables! Now, if you tried to tell me when I was a kid that I would enjoy drinking vegetables, I would have called your bluff! However, these smoothies are delicious and something we all really look forward to!
Every so often we plan a ‘Fruit Smoothie Friday’, where we all submit ideas for a smoothie for the week and vote on which one we want to make on Friday. In fact we are in the middle of a Fruit Smoothie Friday week right now, and the smoothie that won the most votes to try was: “Rosemary Pineapple Delight.” (recipe below)
Living well and eating healthy is a difficult thing to do in this fast paced world that we live in. It’s easy to stop by a fast food place for a quick bite so you can get going. That is why we like to make events out of healthy living.
Having others involved makes it easier to stick to a healthy diet, but also more enjoyable! Would you like to join us? Why not start by trying the recipe that won the popular vote this week?
Rosemary Pineapple Delight
- 1 cup coconut water
- 1 cup spinach
- 1/2 avocado
- 1/2 banana
- 1/2 sprig rosemary
- 1 tbsp hemp hearts
- 1/2 cup pineapple chunks
The end result should look something like this (and taste delicious):
